Makya Little & Harold Sims’ Shared Platform

  • We will work together to ensure equity and inclusion while celebrating diversity in and throughout our region.

We are both committed to increasing educational opportunities—including advanced academic programs—and ensuring these programs are equitable, accessible, and available to students throughout our shared districts.

We will fight to ensure school resources—from college and career counseling to mental health services—are available in languages native to the population our region serves.

  • We will serve students through the addition of programs and the removal of barriers.

Little is a product of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and fought to help reform the admissions process at Thomas Jefferson “TJ” High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). These changes led to the most diverse classes in TJ’s 30-year history and higher admission rates for students from our districts. She also partnered with community members to advocate for the establishment of John R. Lewis High School’s Leadership Program as Co-Chair for Lewis Academy NOW’s “See it, Be it!” Speaker Series.

Sims is passionate about ensuring improved relationships between School Resource Officers (SROs) and students so that administrators, parents, and students are protected and served. Drug prevention programs in addition to exposure to future careers in law enforcement will allow all community members to have a more informed perspective and for students to make wiser decisions and reduce dropout rates.

Together, we are committed to bringing innovative programs to the eastern areas of our region.

  • As law enforcement professionals at the federal and local levels, we strive to ensure schools are safe with support for mental health, drug prevention, and SRO policies that protect students.

We will work with administrators to ensure accountability for bullying and abusive behavior among both students and educators entrusted with the protection of our students and fellow educators and administrators.

We will work with Congressional representatives to lobby for social media accountability to ensure cyberbullying has no place in our schools and that threats to school safety are quickly identified, investigated, and eliminated.

  • We will serve our educators by supporting full collective bargaining, increasing pay, and decreasing class sizes.

Educators are the backbone of public education. As advocates of public education, we will fight for resources and policies that give our educators a seat at the table to ensure they are able to take care of their families while also serving ours.

As parents of students of color, we are also committed to recruiting and retaining diverse educators so that students can see themselves reflected in the workforce which not only educates them, but also helps build the self-esteem necessary for them to thrive.

  • We will work to ensure our students who choose alternate post-secondary education opportunities to enter the workforce by supporting academy, apprentice, and entrepreneurship programs.

We will pursue enhanced partnerships with community colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), labor organizations, and local chambers of commerce to expand the horizons of all students we serve.

Who is Harold Sims

“I am the dream of my late grandmother, Josephine. She lived to be 97 years young, and was a descendent of enslaved Africans here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She taught me what it meant to be resilient – as a woman who refused to give up and fought for basic human rights, to include the right to vote and the right to a public education. It is this resiliency that drove me to devote my life to public service in the Commonwealth of Virginia for over the past two decades.

I am the product of a single parent household, an active FCDC member, a husband, a father of five children, a pastor, a public safety officer, youth mentor and product of a public school education. I will bring that diverse experience to the Fairfax County School Board and continue to serve my community to help ensure that the next generation can beat the odds as I did.”
