Education is the Antedote for Apathy.

At the core of the American democratic experiment is the idea that our government derives its power and legitimacy from the consent of the governed. That consent is expressed in its fullest when voters elect their representatives. Yet, as a BipartisanPolicy.org report shows, every four years, about 80% of eligible voters do not participate in some of the most determinative contests in our democracy: midterm primary elections.

That percentage increases with regard to state and local elections—many taking place during “off years” when no state-wide, federal, or presidential elections occur. Most Americans lack awareness as to who their school board, county board, or state house and sentate representatives are. However, understanding the importance of their roles and responsibilities is the first step in becoming a more educated voter and holding your elected officials accountable.

The Educated Voter Series—produced by Friends of Makya Little—is designed to break down the mechanics of elections, legislative processes, and how everyday citizens can become the change they want to see in their community. We invite you to engage in this series of events and to share the resources we produce to help unify our community so that we can solve problems that impact our shared prosperity. Together.
